The Drill~

I NEVER saw the tampon thing until someone pointed it out to me, and even then I can't really think of it that way. Instead, I always get thoroughly freaked out by it - the noises it makes, the way it moves and looks - EEK!

I also find it both eerie, forshadowy, and unsettling how Azula watches the commander bomb out and decidedly takes over without so much as a second thought - and succeeds way better with two people over the commander's dozens. Does that mean general incompetence or incredible talent on Ty Lee and Mai's sides? I dunno.

Also, Aang~ So smart and yet so silly and awesome. And-and SOKKA. He's BRILLIANT in this episode. I really hate it when people say he's stupid - he's really really clever and smart! It really shines in this ep. Really it does.

And Mai...<3 Such a priss. She would rather fry than get mucky. I heart you Mai!

I am dying to know just what Azula was taught all of her life. It's obvious that Ozai taught her with care, but when the real stuff started - that is, when he started preparing her for being his heir - you don't really get a gist of when it happened. Was it when Ozai realised Zuko wasn't quite as talented? Or was it when he was banished? And why DID he take such care in training her so thoroughly, so that at a mere fourteen years of age she's already outsmarting generals and leaders three or four times her age? I want to knooooow...

I think it's a mixture of incredible talent, and also the fact that Ty Lee and Mai's skills aren't the kind that the soldiers are trained to deal with. Especially Ty Lee.

VERY good point. As skilled as they are, I doubt the Terra Team ever saw anything like Chi Blocking before. Yikes.

My guess for why Azula is so thoroughly trained by age 14 ia that Ozai a) wanted her to be as useful as possible by the time the comet came along, and b) she turned out to be so talented and so eager to get ahead that Ozai rushed her along because she seemed capable of handling the pressure. A bit like a dad pushing and pushing a child that seems to have some brilliant gift for a sport. All conjecture, but I suppose Ozai as a teacher would have been very very different from Iroh, who patently refused to let Zuko hurry his firebending training along while he wasn't ready yet. Iroh was trying to make a balanced fighter who wouldn't get himself killed, while Ozai was trying to make a super-genius.

You're absolutely right. I really doubt that Ozai would be as patient and encouraging as Iroh, and would maybe - just maybe - use mockery to get her to be more determined.

Maybe that's why Ozai never actually kicked Zuko out of the line of succession, even when he'd been banished for years and was not expected to return. To keep Azula on her toes with the idea that Zuko just might, might snatch the throne from under her if she didn't become the very best she could be, and better.

Ohhhh, that's a good point. I wouldn't put it past him to be that manipulative.

There's not really any other reason why he'd keep Zuko's option on the throne open, I think? Except to screw with Zuko's head some more, but I can't see Ozai giving a damn one way or another what Zuko thought once the kid was out of the way for good.

That's a good point. The way it seemed in Zuko Alone, you really get the idea that Azula watches wayyy more often than she lets on, and that bringing Zuko along was pure spur-of-the-moment.

Yeeeah. When I looked back, a lot of people said the drill looked like a tampon.
