I've talked about this episode a lot, and I don't think I have many new thoughts. But here are a handful:
"So Dad wants to meet with his advisers. Alone. Without anyone else around." Azula: IS NOT AT ALL PUT OUT BY THIS, NOT EVEN A LITTLE.
Also, suddenly I find myself wondering just what this meeting of Ozai's involves, since apparently he can't just send the kids off to do their own thing in the ENORMOUS PALACE. I hope I'm not the only one thinking epic Fire Lord orgy.
OTT as it is, I really love the big emotional revelations at the end. I spent most of my adolescence living with a lot of free-floating rage, so the whole "Who are you angry at?"/"I don't know!" routine is one I'm familiar with. And also Zuko's increasing desperation as he denies being angry with any of his relatives.
And, of course, there is nothing in the world funnier than Azula's attempt at heterosexuality.
Speaking of Azula: it's kind of creepy how, in the end, while everyone else is trashing Chan's house, she's just watching him lose it. And smiling. Because I'm at heart an Azula redemptionista, I often have to remind myself that, while she may not actually be a full-blown sociopath, she's not remotely a nice person.
Oh, and there was some kind of B-plot. How does Toph know that (a) Aang is exposing his tattoos and (b) he's wearing trunks?
I....really love this episode. I was dismayed to learn that it's one of the most hated episodes, because I really love and enjoy it. I love the emotions, the glimpses of life, the ridiculous attempts to blend in, all of it. I love it all. It's probably one of the episodes that I could watch a million times and still love it. Does that make me odd?
Those posts are great! And now I'm going to steal your screencaps and point out the things they put in my head:
Sometimes you really need to see something in screencap form to appreciate how good it is.
I know you commented on it as well, but everything about Mai and Zuko's body language in this ep makes me smile.
I noticed here for the first time that Azula's body language is classic Nervous Flirt. It's going in my List of Reasons Why Azula Is Not a True Sociopath: her manipulation skills are ... lacking in some areas.
Even though this picture mostly symbolises happier times for the family, look at Zuko's hands. His right hand is clutching the left, as if he's tense or nervous.
