So this is one of my favourites, right? Up until we hit the challenges, anyway, because I'll take bad puns over plot any day.
But I totally understand why a friend, having seen this episode, and only this episode, was a bit puzzled when I became obsessed with AtLA. This, even more than the other episodes of the first half of Book 1, is such a kids story.
ON THE OTHER HAND: PUNS. And another glimpse of Aang's past.
There seems to be some fanon floating around, that Toph winds up succeeding Bumi as the ruler of Omashu. I really can't imagine anyone better for the job.
I loved the challenges, but I love a good puzzle, even if it was obvious none of the challenges would be solved straightforwardly (because challenges like this never are). And it was also obvious that the nutty old king had to be Bumi -- surprisingly buff for a guy over a hundred years old by that point -- but I enjoyed it anyway.

This was the very first episode of Avatar I ever saw. And I only saw the second half. Based on that I'm not surprised it took me another year to start watching the show, but I am a bit sad. Now I can appreciate the episode for what it is, but it was just weird and made no sense on my first viewing.
It's definitely the last episode I'd use if I was pimping the show.
On the other hand, piecesofalice, watching it with me a few weeks back, asked, "Is the movie like this?!" And I was very sad to have to admit that no, it wasn't.
"Lettuce leaf?"

Ooh. I approve of this fanon.
