UNDERRATED GENIUS. this is actually the episode that convinced me it was a good deciison to watch the rest of Season 1. Lying as a solution on a kid's show?
I don't know if I'd call it "worst episode ever," but it's certainly not one of my favorites. The moralizing is *so* heavy-handed AND THE CANYON CRAWLERS CREEP ME THE HELL OUT, OKAY? But mostly it's the way the central message is pounded into our heads over and over that bugs me.
Agreed; it's not really sufficiently subverted by the lie-as-solution conclusion. And to be honest, I found it a bit too predictable, how Sokka and Katara immediately chose sides.
Probably my least favorite episode, this. It never really pulled me in, not in the least because the way they conveniently got rid of Appa seemed so contrived. And everything from the stark differences between the two tribes to the moralizing was just so over-the-top.
Shallower reason for disliking "The Great Divide": it disappointed me dreadfully simply by being the second episode in a row with no Prince Zuko at all. I spent most of it praying he'd show up ;)
I honestly am one of the few that will defend this episode, since it is pretty funny, but even then I find myself skipping over it when I rewatch it. So perhaps, I'm both?
I just thought it was neat how the leader of the grungy tribe was a chick.
